Industrial pump and piping installation with pressure instruments

Reliable pump operation starts long before the first startup. The foundation, connected pipework, inlet conditions, shaft alignment and instrumentation all influence how the equipment performs once it enters service.

Start with the foundation and piping

Check the foundation and baseplate against the manufacturer’s installation instructions. Piping should be independently supported rather than forcing the pump nozzles into alignment. Excessive flange loads can distort the casing or affect alignment.

Protect suction conditions

Confirm the available net positive suction head against the pump’s required margin over the intended operating range. Avoid avoidable restrictions, pockets of trapped air and abrupt disturbances immediately upstream of the suction connection.

Commission systematically

  • Verify rotation, coupling guarding and alignment.
  • Check lubrication, seal support and valve positions.
  • Prime and vent the casing as required by the equipment design.
  • Record the initial flow, pressure, vibration and temperature readings.

The approved pump manual, site procedures and applicable engineering standards take precedence over this general guidance.
